Musician Interview: David Long
Have a listen to our interview with musician David Long about his new album All Things Will Stay Silent.
David Long is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, film soundtrack composer and all-round NZ music legend it would take us hours to list all the projects and bands Davids’s work has touched. But just to give you a flavour, he was the winner of the 2020 best score at the APRA Silver Scrolls for his soundtrack for The Luminaries. He has worked on all of Peter Jackson’s films of the last two decades.
David has had a long association with contemporary dance creating amazing pieces of music for various dance pieces.
David is or has been a key member, or played with, or produced many of NZ’s most acclaimed bands such as The Mutton Birds, The Six Volts, and currently The Labcoats and Teeth. To name but a few.
He balances a vibrant and boundary pushing experimental practice with top level mainstream creative projects. Often letting the two strands cross fertilise each other.
You can read just a little bit about David's musical history in Daniel Beban’s excellent recent book Future Jaw-Clap: The Primitive Art Group and Braille Collective Story, that uncovers the musical revolution that occurred in Wellington during the 1980s.
His latest album All Things Will Stay Silent is a beautiful, artful, gorgeously recorded and performed work that features some of Wellingtons finest musicians. The album is a textural exploration of sonic environments and poetic ruminations that will delight the ear and the heart, and is a sequel to his 2022 album Ash and Bone.
We were thrilled when David took time out from his very busy schedule to discuss All Things Will Stay Silent and many of his other musical journeys with us. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to David.
This interview was done in conjunction with Caffeine and Aspirin, the arts and entertainment review show on Radioactive FM, was arranged by Rattle Records, and was conducted by host Neil Johnstone.
