Te Wiki o Te Reo 2024 runs from 14 to 21 Mahuru (September), and Wellington City Libraries are hosting a week of fun events for the whole whānau!

16 Rāhina - Monday

Waiata Mai – Let’s Sing: Baby Rock and Rhyme Special, 10:30-11am (Waitohi | Johnsonville)

Nau mai hoki mai. Join us in Waitohi Library for a special morning celebrating te reo Māori.  A fun and free programme for parents and caregivers to interact with their pēpē through waiata, huariti, and pukapuka.

Let's talk in English | Learn Waiata Special, 11am-12pm (Te Awa-a-Taia | Kilbirnie)

To celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, join our conversation group to sing waiata, practice te reo pronunciation and have fun! This a regular conversational English group. Practise speaking English with other people and make new friends. Great for beginners -- this is perfect for people who are learning English.

Crafterschool Mahi toi – Waka, 3:30 – 4:30pm (Te Takapū o Patukawenga | Tawa)

Enjoy a Te Ao Māori focus on today’s Crafterschool activity. Come learn how to make a waka using easy-to-find items and its importance in Māori culture. Tamariki are welcome with their mātua (parents) or kaitiaki (caregiver).

Join us for an afternoon of creativity featuring a special focus on whakataukī (Māori words of wisdom). Come and find your calm while celebrating the beauty of te reo Māori!

Nohinohi Reorua at Tawa Community Centre, 10:30-11am (Tawa Community Centre)

Come and join us for a special bilingual (te reo Māori and English) storytime session at Tawa Community Centre.

Get your superhero hooked on reading! Nohinohi Reorua (Bilingual Little Ones) is one of our most popular programmes featuring stories, rhymes, songs and games in te reo Māori and English. This programme is perfect for tamariki aged 2 - 6 years accompanied by their caregivers.

Let's embrace the values of mātauranga (knowledge) and auahatanga (creativity) as our tamariki engage with poi, rākau, games, and puzzles. This is an event for older preschoolers. Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui – be strong, be brave, be steadfast in learning!

Kapa Haka - Newlands Intermediate, 11am-12pm (Waitohi | Johnsonville)

Join us as Newlands Intermediate's Kapa Haka group puts on a stunning performance at the terraces as we celebrate Te Reo Māori - a forever language.
